I was the first Sports Director for the station. When I came to UNH in the spring of 1974, WNHU broadcast football games only. The General Manager at the time, Dick Gelgauda, allowed me to broaden the scope. That spring, I started doing most of the baseball games, some hockey, basketball in the fall, as well as football.

 

The baseball team was nationally ranked at the time, so we traveled with them to regional and national NCAA Division II tournaments during three of my four years there, broadcasting the games back home.

 

I also did two or three music shifts, depending on the semester.

 

At that time, an annual Broadcaster of the Year Award was given to the student who was determined by station management to have made the greatest contribution to the station that year or over the course of their tenure at UNH.

 

I was in the middle of a music shift one day when Dick Gelgauda and Station Manager Tom Kuzar came into the studio and asked to have a moment to make a special announcement over the air. Little did I know, and I was shocked when the announcement was to award me the Broadcaster of the Year Award for my contribution to the station and the development of the sports department.

 

Of all my great memories of working at the station, and there are many, this one stands out.
