I hosted general alternative rock and Homegrown Harmonies, which featured all local bands. In fact, Homegrown Harmonies is where I met my husband.

 

I absolutely loved working alongside my fellow DJs and student staff to connect with venues in the area and support local and upcoming national bands. On several occasions, WNHU “welcomed” acts to Toad’s Place, Tune-Inn and The Moon. Sadly, the former two no longer exist.

 

Several of us had the opportunity to introduce the bands, interview them and have them record station IDs for us. There were so many memorable artists along the way, including The Mighty Lemon Drops, The Sugarcubes, They Might Be Giants, The Connells, Ranking Roger and Venus Beads.

 

One especially memorable moment was when The Sugarcubes came into the WNHU studios.

 

Yes, Björk was in the WNHU studios!

 

Then there was Nirvana. WNHU welcomed the band to The Moon for what turned out to be their only Connecticut show.

 

Looking back, what I loved most about my time at WNHU was being part of a group of DJs and student staff who were passionate about music and about connecting the station with the community. From local bands on Homegrown Harmonies to nationally known artists passing through the area, WNHU gave us the opportunity to be right in the middle of it all.
